Is it more than a story?

I always liked stories and books

But also TV, plays, myths, and movies. In college, I majored in English. What could be better than four years of stories?

I had a great run first as a fundraiser for great organizations and then as a consultant, coach and communicator through my practice, Lucid Advising.

In early 2024 I put aside my work to tend to some family business because I’m a mother, a wife, and a daughter — but also decided to write the book.

Since I’ve had the story in my head a long time, the work was fun, and writing 1000 words a day meant it came out very quickly. Then the revision and editing took some time, but I was finally “ready” to show it to agents in hopes of getting it published at a big house, with the accompanying pride and prestige. If that didn’t happen, I was always going to do it myself. I didn’t write it to toss it away.

Indie publishing (more dignified than self publishing? I’m not sure) surfaced as the smartest way to go when ten or more agents said thanks but no thanks.

Most didn’t respond at all.

Declaration of Independence

Pulling it together myself was not easy. Writing was much more fun.

Many, many days, I was awash in self-doubt. But with lots of help (a page on my collaborators is coming soon), I got it out there. Thank you for finding it.

Not only did I get it done, I reminded myself that the world is not divided between the talent and the production team. Life isn’t split into faculty, staff., and students.

Everyone has choices, and when you’re ready, you can always make something.

As choreographer Mark Carpenter says to to Henri in Never Ready’s chapter 25…

"They want to be the gatekeepers telling people what’s good and what’s not. They like to say something terrible disguised as something clever. They are the hangers-on, Hank. Whatever you do in life, make something. Do something. Don’t be a hanger-on.”
